What Is Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite clay is a type of clay that typically comes from layers of volcanic ash, and is used internally and externally for detoxification and for support of health in general.
Are these NaturallyOne products safe for children?
It is totally up to you what you believe but after many years of research, we believe they are safe for everyone and everything. If you desire natural alternatives for your children, please be aware that children require a lot less than adults. They require lots of love and attention, so please listen to what they are saying. It would be easy to teach them a story about nature and then getting them to choose the natural medicines and opportunities in life over materialistic ones.
Calcium Montmorillonite clay is safe for children. Our customers have used it on infants with very good results.
Here are a few examples; For children under 5 stone, give 1 teaspoon per day in 8 ounces of fltered water, milk or juice. For children greater than 5 stone, give 2 teaspoons per day in 8 ounces of filtered water, juice or dairy free milk.
Clay baths for children are becoming more popular as the results people experience are written about, particularly on websites. Since children are smaller than adults, the amount of clay used in the bath and the amount of time in the water needs to be adjusted accordingly. Children may sit in the clay bath up to the waist. As with adults, the more the body is exposed to the clay bath water, the greater the impact. Go slowly, especially with children who are not well.
For children under 20 pounds, add 4 ounces of bath clay to running water in the tub. The child should not stay in the bath more than 5 minutes. Every child is different. Listen and observe for what is right for their individual constitution. For children between 20 and 50 pounds, add 4 to 6 ounces of clay to the bath and let the child bathe for between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on the child. For children greater than 50 pounds, one of our 8 ounce clay baths can be added to the water and the child can bathe for up to 10 minutes, depending on the child. Rinse the clay water down the drain with water after the bath. It is safe for sewer systems and septic tanks.
Is It Safe To Consume Clay?
Not all types of clay are safe to consume. Specifically, sodium and calcium bentonite are usually safe to consume. However, you should only consume clay that is labeled as "intended for internal use" or something to that effect. You also need to be aware sodium bentonite contains more sodium. Assuming you choose the correct type of clay, clay is not only safe to consume; it is recommended that you consume it for its toxin-pulling capabilities.
So, calcium montmorillonite Clay be taken internally then?
Yes. Thousands of people around the world use calcium bentonite clay internally for many reasons. The most important thing to remember is: the only type of clay we want to mix with humans and animals are montmorillonite clays. This can be calcium montmorillonite bentonite clay or sodium montmorillonite bentonite clay. Please remember that the quality of purity is extra vital when choosing the most effective healing clays. NaturallyOne’s clay is among those safe for internal consumption. In addition, NaturallyOne offers clay for external use on the contrary.
Can I drink bentonite clay used in wine making?
Based on our research and knowledge, we would not drink clay used in wine production. Although you might think it’s safe because the wine will be consumed, there is additional processing that takes place before the wine is bottled, including fermentation. Ask the vendor if it is safe to drink internally as well as for a microbial analysis. You want to make sure it’s been tested for pathogens. There are many grades of clays on the market, not all are suitable for human consumption.
Is the screen mesh important?
The screen mesh is important for internal consumption, since the higher the mesh, the better the clay mixes in water or juice. You’ll want the clay to hydrate well during the mixing process. Our calcium bentonite dry powder clay clay is milled to 325 screen mesh.
Inquire about the processing of the clay. Has it been irradiated or treated with an alcohol wash or heat to destroy microorganisms? If so, it’s likely that the beneficial elements of the clay have been compromised. Our calcium bentonite green clay is sun-dried in the Mojave Desert area of California in temperatures reaching up to 130°F. Our clay has neither been irradiated nor treated with heat or alcohol. We always go for quality over quantity. We spend time making sure our range of products is of highest quality.
When Should I Not Consume Clay?
You should not really consume clay when you are taking medications or antibiotics. If you must take your medications, consume clay several hours before and/or after taking the medications, because clay usually removes those medications from the body.
What is the difference between calcium bentonite and sodium bentonite?
Calcium bentonite contains more calcium. Sodium bentonite contains more sodium. Sodium bentonite clay expands when in contact with liquid, so it is most commonly used in industrial and external applications, but sometimes internally as well. Calcium bentonite clay is most commonly used internally, but can also be used externally by applying it to the skin or mixing it in water to prepare a clay bath.
Are all Calcium Bentonites non-swelling?
No. Some strong Calcium Bentonites swell at a 3 to 1 ratio. Swelling Green Calcium Bentonites are very popular healing clays.
Which is better, calcium bentonite or sodium bentonite?
Many people prefer calcium bentonite to sodium bentonite because it is gentler on the system. Unless you have specifically been told to you lack sodium, we say avoid consuming sodium bentonite and use it for external purposes only. Calcium bentonite can be used for both. People have reported some sodium bentonites as having an unpleasant taste. And of course, sodium is the primary element after silica dioxide in sodium bentonite clay, which some are sensitive to as well. Our sodium bentonite bath clay is for external use only.
Can I overdose on clay? How much is too much?
It’s unlikely an individual can overdose using clay. One would have to ingest 40% of their body weight in clay to "overdose." Constipation is a signal from the body that an abundance of putrefied fecal matter, mucous, and other unwanted toxic sludge is exiting the body at once. It is a sign that the clay is working. However, suffering the discomfort of constipation is not necessary. The options are to either 1. cut the amount of clay being consumed in half, or 2. add a natural laxative such as prune juice, raisins, or flax seeds to the diet to relieve the constipation. Remember to little of the clay may not have the desired effect.
Can I use clay while breastfeeding or pregnant?
Yes, women who breastfeed drink clay. In fact, in some cultures, women seek out clay to ingest to increase fertility. In the book “The Healing Power of Clay” by Michel Abehsera, the author cites pregnant women using the clay both internally and externally. Drinking clay while breastfeeding allows the newborn to safely ingest the clay as well.
How do I choose the right clay for me?
Any type of clay you buy should be from a reputable source. They should have a physical address and phone number and you should be able to speak to a live person via telephone and get a response from a real person via email.
The particular vendor should tell you if their clay is safe for internal consumption. Don’t make that assumption yourself.
Check to see if they have a mineral analysis and bacterial analysis available and inquire why not, if not.
What is the pH of Earth's Natural Calcium Bentonite Clay?
Our Drinking Powder has a pH of 9.7. It is alkaline and therefore counters acidity in the body. Request our free report “Alkalinity and the Body” by clicking here. You can also read our blog post about Preventing Acidosis with Calcium Bentonite Clay.

Is it safe to use clay while taking antibiotics?
It is okay to use clay along with antibiotics provided you leave a 3 hour window between the clay and the medication. This is because some medications have metallic components in them. Part of the clay’s job is to attract anything that does not belong in the body and to remove it from the system, such as mercury, lead, arsenic, parasites, bacteria, etc.
Does Clay Cause Side Effects?
Bodily reactions to consuming clay are usually due to detoxification symptoms caused by clay's immense ability to pull toxins from the body. So although consuming clay itself does not usually have any side effects, you may experience effects in your body during the process of detoxification.
How Much Clay Should I Consume?
The average person can benefit greatly from clay's detoxifying power by consuming about a teaspoon of clay in a glass of water, once or twice a day. Some people may be able to handle more than that, but it's best to start slow and let your body get rid of its toxins gradually. Remember that clay is very potent and powerful.
How Does Bentonite Clay Remove Toxins?
Clay is highly negatively charged, and most toxins are positively charged. Thus, clay removes harmful chemicals and toxins by literally attracting, or "pulling" them to itself. At that point, the body is not able to utilize the toxin filled clay molecules, and so it flushes it out of the body. The result? Toxins are removed in an efficient, inconspicuous way.
How Can I Use Clay Externally?
You can make a paste and apply it to your hair, your face, or your skin. You can also relax in a clay bath, or put together a foot detox bath. You can also make a toothpaste out of clay and use it to brush your teeth… there are loads of new healthy ideas to try.
Is Consuming Clay A New Idea?
Not at all. It has been discovered that cultures throughout the ages have used clay in many different ways, including consuming it. Some people groups in Africa still consume clay to this day.
Should I Be Concerned About Aluminum Content In Clay?
No, because the aluminum in clay is connected to the entire clay particle, and it does not separate. So when toxins stick to the clay molecules (of which aluminum is a part), the body simply expels the whole clay particle, which includes the toxins and the aluminum. So your body does not actually store up or use the aluminum in any way. It passes through.
Can Clay Absorb Nutrients And Other Good Things From The Body?
Amazingly, no. Toxins, many of which are man-made, are positively charged, and so are attracted to clay, which is negatively charged. Minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients that the body needs, are not attracted to clay. When introduced to those good nutrients, clay simply ignores them and goes on it merry way.
ANTIBIOTICS AND INFECTIONS
How do I treat a sinus infection?
Here is an example: Along with internal use, hydrate the clay 1 part clay to 3 parts water. Stir with a plastic spoon or spatula (avoid metal). Let the clay sit covered overnight at room temperature to reach the consistency of sour cream. Once hydrated, apply the clay about 1/4″ thick to the area directly below the cheekbone. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap and leave on for an hour, then rinse off. Repeat twice a day. Once your system starts to alkalize, this could be something you will not be dealing with anymore.
How do I treat an ear infection?
Here is an example: There is a tube which runs from behind the ear lobe down the neck into the lymphatic system. Apply cold pressed castor oil which has been warmed to this area. Begin a very light stroking motion beginning behind the ear lobe and down the neck to the collarbone. This should be done with the index and third finger. This is a very light feather touch. Continue for about 10 to 15 minutes, always beginning behind the ear and down the neck This should help drain infection from the ear. Then rinse with soap and water and apply a very thick clay poultice behind the ear and in front of the ear. Cover area with plastic wrap. The clay should be at least 1/4″ thick . Leave for at least 30 minutes then rinse. I would do this twice daily until the infection subsides.
PREPERATION/DOSAGE/STORAGE
Does clay go bad?
No, dry clay doesn’t go bad. It’s millions of years old in most cases. It can, however, pick up odors from neighboring items if left under sinks or in the garage. For this reason, we recommend storing it dry in your kitchen pantry.
When added to water however, if exposed to bacteria (from hands or mouth), it can grow microbes. We recommend not drinking clay water directly out of the bottle to avoid bacteria from the mouth being transferred to the bottle. Hands should be washed prior to dipping into a jar of hydrated clay (mask) to avoid bacterial transfer. Keep in mind, not all clays are created equally. Some are not clean to begin with so even without bacteria transfer, when hydrated they can harbor microbes. This is why we recommend checking the microbial analysis provided by the vendor of any clay you consider using. You can find ours here.
How do I mix and use drinking clay?
To take NaturallyOnes dry powder clay internally, mix 1 part dry powdered clay to 8 parts filtered water in a glass bottle with a non-metal, air tight lid. Avoid contact with metal. For example, add ¼ cup clay to 2 cups filtered water. Shake vigorously to mix.
Once hydrated, for adults we recommend beginning by drinking 1 ounce in the AM for a week or so. Follow with a glass of water or juice to get the clay into the system. Add another ounce of clay at bedtime after a week or so. Listen to your body. Some people experience constipation when beginning to use clay internally. This is often a symptom of colon cleansing. . Please remember to drink plenty of water to help avoid this situation. Work up to 2 ounces in the AM and 2 ounces in the PM for general maintenance. Only use as detox purposes. Do not drink everyday for 365 days a year.
How do I store hydrated drinking clay?
Keep hydrated drinking clay in a glass or food-grade plastic bottle. Glass is preferable. Refrigeration is unnecessary, but place out of direct sunlight. Settling is normal. Shake well before pouring. Adding natural organic flavouring such as lemon juice is a refreshing tip.
Clay Composition
Your clay contains aluminum. Is that safe?
NaturallyOnes clay is among the purest on the market. By reviewing our Mineral Analysis, you’ll see that the aluminum in our clay is aluminum oxide, which is a form that cannot be absorbed by the body. In addition, it’s a trace mineral that works in concert with – and not solo – in the body. The clay does its work and then passes through the elimination system along with the toxins that have been absorbed – and adsorbed.
If interested in learning about the mineral composition of the calcium bentonite green clays offered on this website, visit the Clay Mineral Analysis page.
Are your clays tested for lead?
A large percentage of people that buy our drinking powder do so for heavy metal detoxification. There are reports of clay helping with this, including the reduction or elimination of lead in the body. Based on these cases, it would seem that any trace amount of lead is indeed not bioavailable (absorbable by the body). Many believe that individuals who are metal-sensitive or metal-toxic, are usually, if not always, minerally depleted, which is a factor that prevents the body from eliminating heavy metals.
How do I use clay as a face mask? How often can I use it?
Mix either sodium or bentonite clay with filtered water in a ratio of 1 part clay to 3 parts water in a glass bowl. Mix with either a wooden or plastic spoon (NO METAL) until a smooth consistency. Leave covered overnight for best results. Apply thin layer to face, neck and body and allow to dry. May be left on up to an hour. Rinse off with warm water as needed. Follow with a quality moisturizer.
Everybody responds differently to clay. Some of our customers report good results with a clay mask three times a week, others use it less frequently. Listen to your body and observe your results for optimal use.

How do I use clay for general health and well being?
It honestly varies depending upon you. Here is an example:
For internal use, mix 1 part clay to 8 parts filtered water. Then shake it well and store in a food-grade plastic or glass container, preferably glass. Start taking 1 oz in the AM on an empty stomach. After 4 or 5 days, add a second 1 ounce dose before bedtime. Listen to your body. Some people increase their intake to 2 ounces in the AM and 2 ounces in the PM for general good health.
Why do some people experience constipation when drinking clay?
Pure calcium bentonite clay is a strong catalyst that pulls substances that are positively-charged to it. Positively charged substances include impurities, toxins, fungus, free radicals, and bad bacteria.. Constipation with clay use signals that the clay is pulling old feces from the bowel into the digestive tract. It’s best to slowly begin initial use of clay internally. Work through the constipation by including psyllium husks, prunes, and other natural laxatives in the diet. Ceasing use of the clay may ease the constipation, but the old fecal matter remains in the colon.
Why do you recommend people taking prescription medications check with their doctor or pharmacist?
The reason for this is in the event there are any metallic elements in any of the medications, the clay will likely pull those out of the medications and render them less effective. It’s suggested you wait three to four hours before or after taking such medications and drinking clay. Time-released medications are another story because they are released over time and you need to have that window for the medications to do their thing – again, if they have metallic elements. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you what’s in your medications. You can then decide what’s best for you.
Why does my skin get red after using clay externally
The skin may appear red initially, which means the clay has successfully done its job and has increased circulation to the area, aiding in healthy detoxification and rejuvenation. Learn more about external uses of clay.

Where Can I Buy Edible Clay?
Some health food stores sell clay, although it's important to make sure you choose clay that is labeled as being "for internal use," if you plan to consume it. There are plenty of trustworthy sites online that sell clay, too. Keep in mind that there are many different types of clays that are used industrially and even externally (facial creams, lotions, etc.) that should not be consumed. For a detailed list of where to buy bentonite clay, click here.
Why don't doctors prescribe clay for illnesses?
The medical industry is essentially run by the Pharmaceutical companies. They can't make the big profits they're used to with a product that can't be patented, but they make BILLIONS selling deadly prescription drugs. Many naturopaths and holistic practitioners use clay to help their patients.
Should I buy dry powder clay or get clay that has already been mixed with water (hydrated)?
It's easier to buy clay that's already been hydrated for you, but it's much less expensive to buy the clay in powder form and hydrate it yourself! Click Here for instructions on how to mix clay.
Is there a safe edible clay?
Yes, but the FDA won't approve a natural clay as being edible (even though it lists Calcium Bentonite Clay on its list of GRAS - Generally Regarded as Safe - items) unless you have millions to spend for testing you specific brand. They won't consider the millions of testimonies and thousands of years of healing use. On the FDA Board of Directors sit several representatives of major Pharmaceutical companies! They can't make the astronomical profits with clay that they make with drugs - clay can't be patented. The FDA approves many drugs that are unsafe and list all the many possible dangerous side effects IN SMALL PRINT, then they have to remove those drugs from the market when people start dying. So, yes, there is very safe, edible clay, but no brand has been FDA approved. We recommend Calcium Bentonite Clay over all others.
If a clay has aluminum and other metals in it, is it dangerous?
No. Clay is not digested or broken down into its mineral elements, but rather acts as a whole and holds its integrity. It grabs positively charged items (toxins, metals, bacteria, etc.) and then exits the body. Alumino silicates are crystalline compounds composed of silicon, aluminum and oxygen. Aluminum bound in this form poses no health risk. If you have a pure source, where weather and outside influences haven't added impurities, aluminum isn't in isolated form, and is not absorbed by the body.
Can toxins be re-absorbed by the body if the detox process is not done properly?
A high quality natural clean Calcium Bentonite clay is always stronger than a processed clay. A healing clay ground fine enough to pass through a 325 screen mesh is recommended. Take 1-2 ounces of clay twice a day (depending on how many toxins you are consciously exposed to, i.e. working around chemicals) for a week. Then, after the system is cleaned and balanced, 1 ounce a day usually does the trick. (This is referring to 1 oz of premixed liquid clay - 1 part of clay powder to 8 parts of purified water.) This is preventative and keeps toxins from getting in the body. To help rid the body of stored toxins, the Family Hope Center, which treats Autistic children, recommends 2 clay baths a week for 5 weeks using 2 cups of Therapeutic Living Clay per bath. Becasue Mercury lingers, it might be a good idea to repeat clay baths on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Clay draws impurities to itself by adsorption, and then pulls them into itself by absorption, so a danger of re-absorption by the body is less probable. Some other products may loosen the metals but aren't as good at capturing them to pull them out like clay.
How can I treat my cats and dogs for parasites, and other possible needs. What type of clay and how much?
Clay is great for pets and helps rid them of internal parasites. If you put powder clay in their water, it mostly sinks to the bottom of the bowl. You can mix clay into their moist food, and small amounts will never be noticed. One trick is to get a syringe (without the needle) and suck some of the premixed clay water (1 to 8 ratio of clay to water) into it and gradually inject it into their mouth. You can't do clay wrong so don't worry about how much, though for kittens a teaspoon would be fine. Bigger pets can take more. Do it about every other day for a week. Then you can go off a week and on a week for months to get the unhatched parasite eggs out. You may notice white specks in the feces and your pet will be friskier. You can brush their teeth with clay also and use it on cuts and rashes topically. Good for horses too. We recommend the Therapeutic Living Clay but Pascalite might work equally well. The Therapeutic Living Clay has a high pH and is milled very finer than others. Because it swells to three times its mass, it has more volume for drawing out impurities and toxins.
